What Brought Matt to Grain Markets?

Matt’s involvement in the grain industry started over 10 years ago and has included everything from table conversations with farmers to international export market analysis. Prior to starting Grain Perspectives in 2015, he was a Pricing Analyst at Ontario Pork and a Grain Marketing Advisor for Cargill.

How Did He Get Here?

It all started on a dairy farm in the heart of the Niagara region. In his childhood he was very actively involved in dairy 4-H, showing everywhere he could. He started his own small herd under the prefix Toptam Holstiens at the age 16.

Before starting his economic studies, Matt received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Royal Roads University. His plan was to get into the agriculture nutrient management career path and he started his certification here in Ontario. That was before taking an environmental economics class, a subject that came second nature to him. After a brief stint in economics at the University of Western Ontario he transferred to Guelph to complete his master’s in economics.

Matt has been involved in several studies and publications including the use of weather derivatives as an alternative to crop insurance along with margin hedging strategies for Ontario pork producers.

Outside of work Matt has a passion for yoga and plans to get his instructor certificate in the coming years.
